Great Hucklow CE Primary

The Woodland Federation of Peak District Schools

The Woodland Federation of Peak District Schools came into being on the 1st January 2018. This came about after a period of formal collaboration between Great Hucklow CE Primary School and Peak Forest CE Primary School since September 2016.

The governing boards of both schools were interested in exploring a new model of leadership as they felt that the collaboration would benefit both schools not only financially but also for staff development and for the children's experiences. The two schools are just 5 miles apart and have a very similar rural catchment. The formal collaboration was a great success so the governors decided to pursue the model of federation. They consulted parents (see Federation Proposal below), the Local Authority and Derby Diocese. The feedback was universally positive so the governing boards decided to federate formally.

The headteacher shares her time equally between the two schools and the staff have shared inset days,  meetings and professional development. More importantly, the children have lots of shared experiences together which greatly enhances their time at school. There have been many occasions when the children have worked together but to give you a flavour.... the children from both schools do lots of sporting activities together, they have shared fortnightly sessions of community music, they visit each other’s schools for work on the topics we are learning about, they have taken part in a cluster debate and attend annual residential trips together. The children love getting together and have fed back to governors that they would like to meet up more. The staff are also benefitting from a larger staff team who can share planning and resources and who can share experience and advice.
